History & Heritage
Worcestershire’s Vale & Spa depicts substantial heritage spanning thousands of years. A district covering over 250 square miles unsurprisingly has many stories and much history to be told. With monuments, museums, trails and events galore, get ready to learn something new!
The district’s name of Wychavon contains an historical reference as the name is made up of two elements – “Wych”, recalling the Saxon Kingdom of Hwicca (established in 557); and “Avon”, referring to the River Avon that runs through large parts of the area.
Majestic buildings dominate the heritage of the area – visitors will never be far away from the local history with a variety of amazing Abbey and associated complexes, battle-worn bridges, imposing towers and listed buildings.
History is certainly not forgotten with events, trails and even augmented reality allowing visitors and locals alike to never forget what took place to shape the towns and villages before them.
